硝石类矿物的总称。有两种：（1）钾硝石，也叫火硝，化学成分为KNO3；（2）钠硝石，也叫智利硝石，化学成分为NaNO3。一般为无色或白色粒状晶体，具玻璃光泽，硬度1.5—2。易溶于水。是制造火药、肥料、硝酸、药品等的一种原料。
